Overstock merchandise is usually current or from last season, not years old, even if it’s irregular. Manufacturers often buy back merchandise from department stores and sell it to off price retailers all within identical season. Of course, with flaws ranging from a tag sewn upside down or two pant legs with different inseams, it might also be irregular. Sometimes merchandise is unusual. Anyways, overstock happens when department stores overestimate the demand for an item. Certainly, department stores start selling next season’s clothing early, hence those comical swimsuit displays in winter middle.

Sometimes when clothing retailers love bargains very much, they forgo the traditional department store route and venture off price. Stores like Macy’s buy clothing from manufacturers under a buyback clause. Traditionally, ‘offprice’ retailers then buy this overstock from manufacturers at a discount, slash prices, and give it a second chance at life. More and more tho I see women’s clothing at Marshalls with tags that indicate it is a Marshalls item and made for Marshalls. Made me wonder if they now make their own clothes to some extent because they can’t keep the store filled with true designer mark downs. It’s a well the manufacturers have to buy it back, if the merchandise doesn’t sell. These pieces are usually not expensive but certainly not designer anything and often not very exciting pieces.
